Indonesian Team Takes Rest, Skips China Badminton Masters
The Indonesian national team has decided to take time off from international competitions to reassess its performances for the past few months which saw them leaving tournament after tournament without any victory. Being a known world superpower in badminton, Indonesia’s lackluster performances for the past tournaments were a big surprise for the global badminton community.
In last month’s World Championships in Hyderabad, India, the Indonesian team failed to win a title and at this point, the national team has opted to skip the China Masters Super Series, which is slated for September 15 to 20. This decision was a mutual one between the officials of the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) officials and the national coaches.
The wilson badminton rackets will only be temporarily hanged since PBSI Head of Athletes Development Lius Pongoh revealed that the Indonesian team is simply preparing for the Japan Open Super Series which will take place a week after the Chinese event.
Despite the lackluster performances the past few months, the Indonesian team still has what it takes to dominate in future events. In January this year, mixed badminton doubles players Liliyana Natsir and Nova Widianto dominated the Malaysia Open, a Super Series event. In July, another Indonesian Taufik Hidayat clinched the men’s singles title at the US Grand Prix. This only means that the Indonesian team should not be overlooked in major badminton tournaments.
Pongoh said that about eighteen players will be sent to Japan to compete. All of the players have already represented the country in international competitions such as the World Badminton Championships.
